Folios 184-185. Memorial of Richard Ball that he served as surgeon from 1748 in Flanders under the Duke of Cumberland and America under General Amherst after which he was appointed surgeon to the British Factory at Algiers where he lived for almost four years when the Algerines having taken a British vessel as a prize, broken it up in defiance of treaties, enslaved the crew, 'severely bastinado'd' [i.e. beating the soles of the feet with a stick] the captain and another officer and seized 2,500 chequins he (Ball) was sent by James Bruce with express dispatches for London. He says that the reason for the delay in applying to Lord Weymouth for relief is the continuing absence of James Bruce. Ball puts his losses at £408. On the reverse is Richard Ball's affidavit as to the truth of the contents of his Memorial. Folio 185. Copies of the pass (in French) issued 6 July 1748 by the Duke of Cumberland; the certificate of James Napier, Director of the Hospitals at New York dated 8 January 1760; copy of Express, dated at the Consular Chancery in Algiers 27 July 1764, from James Bruce.
