The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Drugs and International Crime Department was established in 1994, following the closure of the Narcotics Control and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Department. The Narcotics Control and AIDS Unit was established in 1987 in response to the global AIDS crisis. The Unit changed its name in 1988 to the Narcotics Control and Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS) Department. Prior to the establishment of the Drugs and International Crime Department, FCO policy on international crime had been the responsibility of the Security Co-ordination Department.
