Description

Folios 180-181: Benjamin William Page, Ipswich.

States that he has no objection to the R being removed from the name of Joseph Pavey, late of the crew of HMS Puissant, at the request of his widow, and encloses various papers for their Lordships' information. Admiralty note on rear says this is to be done.

Folios 182-183: enclosure with folios 180-181. First page is a letter dated 27 June from the Inspector, J. Campbell, who advises the widow that the prize money owed to Joseph Pavey is stopped, owing to his being marked Run from HMS Puissant on 6 November 1814. Inside, a note from M. Rhodes, keeper of the Red-Brick House, a 'mad-house' at Bethnal Green, certifying that Pavey, an armourer in HM Navy, was received into the house, insane, on 21 April 1815, and remained there until he died, on 28 June. Then a two-page letter from the widow, Mary Pavey, via Agents in Red Cross St, Smithfield, explaining that Pavey had served on HMS Acbar and HMS Pembroke, and was then invalided to harbour duty aboard HMS Puissant. As he had served several years 'foreign' in the East Indies, he was given long leave to visit his family, but lost his mind after only ten days had passed and was admitted to Mr Rhodes' house for the insane. Mrs Pavey says she has incurred much expense in his care, and has several children and an aged mother, and asks for the R to be taken from her husband's name so that the prize money may be given to her.

Folios 184-185: enclosure with folios 180-181. Note from Captain Page, saying he has received and will forward the 'elaborate Agent's letter' signed by Mary Pavey, and he will say he has no objection to the R being removed from her husband's name on the books of HMS Puissant, but that as the man was a stranger to him, it would be better if his former captains, if in England, should be asked to make the request. Adds that it would have been much better if the man, upon being taken ill, had been returned to the ship, from where he would have been sent to the King's Hospital at Haslar, and to a proper place of care, and all the moneys due would then have been paid to his wife and children.
