Description

Newsletters received at Dilston in Northumberland, the seat of Sir Francis Radcliffe (created Earl of Derwentwater in 1688), to whom many of the letters were addressed. In 1688 Sir Francis Radclyffe, baronet, was created Baron Tyndale, Viscount Radclyffe and Langley and Earl of Derwentwater - one of only ten peers created by James II. In 1716, his grandson, James Radclyffe, third Earl of Derwentwater, was executed for treason and the Northern Estates were confiscated and subsequently granted to Greenwich Hospital.
