The Directorate of Military Survey was established in 1941 responsible to the War Office for the production of maps and survey across all Military Commands during World War 2. Subordinate to the Directorate in 1982 were 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographical) Royal Engineers (established in 1947) and the Mapping and Charting Establishment Royal Engineers (established in 1970). The Directorate of Overseas Survey (DOS) was established as the Directorate of Colonial Surveys in 1946, and was later renamed DOS in 1957, reporting to the Colonial Office and responsible for survey and mapping of the United Kingdom's colonies, dependencies and overseas territories.
