The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) was established by Royal Charter in 1994 by incorporation of the former Agricultural and Food Research Council (AFRC) with the biotechnology and biological sciences programmes of the former Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC). BBSRC's mission is to promote and support high-quality basic, strategic and applied research and related postgraduate training relating to the understanding and exploitation of biological systems. BBSRC supports over 7000 scientists, postgraduate students and support staff in universities and research institutes in the UK. BBSRC is managed by the BBSRC Council consisting of a range of representatives from UK universities, government and industry; the Council approves policies, strategy, budgets and major funding.
In April 2018 BBSRC became part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
