Administrative / biographical background

The National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) was established by the National Health Service Litigation Authority (Establishment and Constitution) Order 1995, S.I. 1995/2800. Among the main functions of the Authority was establishment and administration of the scheme for meeting liabilities of health service bodies, as well as providing assistance and advice with litigation or potential litigation of the health service bodies. In 2005 with the abolition of the Special Authority order the Family Health Services Appeal Authority (FHSSA) became part of NHSLA. Later in 2013 National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) known today as Practitioner Performance Advice (PPA) became part of NHSLA. With another change with 2019 Directive the NHSLA was given a Safety and Learning function to secure continuous improvement in the quality of services provided to individuals and to promote research in to matters relating to the health service. With the evolution in its functions, NHSLA became known as NHS Resolution.
