Customs House on the north bank of the Thames was constructed in 1814 and was used for the collection of tax and duties for more than 200 years. A customs presence has been in this area of the City of London since the 14th Century. Before 1814, Custom House was based nearby at Sugar Quay, close to the Old Billingsgate Market.
