Description

Folios 264-280: CB number 01439 O.X.O, Copy number 439, UB. 85 Interrogation of Prisoners, May 1918. UB. 85 was sunk on 30 April 1918.

Folio 265: Cover sheet, UB.85.

Folio 266: table of contents.

Folios 266-268: Last Cruise of UB.85 (sunk on 30 April 1918). Proceeded from Heligoland on 16 April 1918 via Fair Isle to North Coast of Ireland. Patrolled off Lough Foyle, fired torpedoes at a steamer off Port Patrick and two off entrance to Belfast Lough. When submerging after sighting a drifter, the conning-tower hatch was not closed properly and water entered the control room. When the batteries gave off gas, surfaced and the crew surrendered. The engineer office opened the vents to ensure the submarine sinking. Plate I: Track of UB.85 (folio 267).

Folio 268: Previous History of UB.85. In February 1918 made a shake down cruise to the Dogger Bank and no attacks were made.

Folio 268: Crew of UB.85: Some experienced Petty Officers but most of the crew were inexperienced. The captain, Lieutenant-Commander Krech had little previous experience.

Folio 274: Cruiser Submarines U.139-150. Informant saw one of these new submarines lying in Kiel in January 1918.

Folio 275: Fifth Submarine Flotilla, Bremerhaven was about to be disbanded but included: UB.21, UB.34, UB.62, UB.64, UB.65, UB.67, UB.73, UB.77, UB.82, UB.83, UB.86 and UB.87.

Folio 277: One informant had served three yard on the Battle Cruise Derfflinger where his action station was in B turret. Information on Arrangements in case of Fire in Turret or Magazines and Damage Sustained in Battle of Jutland.

Folio 277: Battleship Schleswig-Holstein was hit once at Jutland and is now a depot ship.
