Folios 221-222: Scharbeutz, Polarstern and Mars - Capture and Sinking. On 27 March 1918, the three trawlers anchored. In misty weather destroyers were seen to pass them. The same destroyers returned at 5 a.m. on 28 March and it was not realized until too late they were British. The crews surrendered and the trawlers were sunk.
Folio 222: General Remarks on Prisoners. The crews were mostly from the Reserve and seemed pleased to be prisoners.
Folios 222-223: North Sea Outpost Flotilla. Details of patrol areas. List of trawlers within 1st and 2nd Half Flotillas.
Folio 223: Armament of Outpost Trawlers. Each trawler has an old 22 pr. gun forward, two or more depth charges, a number of smoke boxes and an anti-submarine kite.
Folio 223: Wireless Telegraphy in Trawlers. A trawler was fitted with a ½ kw wireless set using a 300-metre wave. Call signs were changed ever few days.
Folio 223: Procedure when Chasing Submarines. On sighting a submarine, the trawler proceeds towards it at high speed, then judging its approximate course, steers a spiral course. A diagram is included.
Folios 223-224: Outpost Trawlers on Convoy Duty. These trawlers mostly convoy tank steamers.
Folio 224: Ems Outpost Flotilla. The old destroyers T.120, 121 and 122 belong to this flotilla.
Folio 224: Standardized Trawlers. The Scharbeutz was one of the new German standardized trawlers.
Folio 224: Minesweeping by Outpost Trawlers. Scharbeutz was being fitted with minesweeping gear.
Folios 224-225: Minesweeping - Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, List and Libau. The Cuxhaven Flotilla consists of the old destroyer T.103 and about 22 tugs. Three or four boats usually sweep abreast. A diagram is included. There are about 20 'M' boats that sweep beyond the Elbe towards Borkum. The Bremerhaven Flotilla consists of the 6th Half Flotilla of 6 trawlers and one 'A' boat. The parent ship of the 6TH Minesweeping Division is stationed in List. It carries 10 or 12 motor boats which are used for sweeping. The Libau Flotilla consists of 12 torpedo boats and a destroyer. Information on Exploratory Sweep and Explosive Sweep are included.
Folios 225-226: Barrage Breakers. These are old merchant ships of 5,000 to 7,000 tons, the hold of which are filled with empty barrels etc. making them almost immune from sinking. They run on to submerged mines exploding them.
Folio 226: War Light-Vessels. Information regarding the location of light-vessels. They have moored hydrophones - a description and diagram is included.
Folio 226: Decoy Torpedo. This is stated as a new device for submarines, fired from a torpedo tube and leaves a trail of oil to mislead hostile vessels while the submarine escapes.
Folios 226-227: Anti-Submarine Explosive Kite. This is a towed device which explodes when striking an object.
Folio 227: Rangefinders. Details of this optical device are included.
Folio 227: Information Relative to Wilhelmshaven and the River Jade. Details of explosive stores, ships using particular entrances, net barrage, submarine practice diving area and patrols are provided.
Folio 228: Information Relative to Bremerhaven, Lehe, Geestemunde and List. Outline information on command and operations are provided.
Folio 228: Personnel of North Sea Outpost Flotilla, etc. A list of commanding officers is provided for the North Sea Outpost Flotilla and some battleships.
Folios 228-229: Submarine Crews (Navigation and Watch keeping Officers). To provide navigating and watch-keeping officers, men from the mercantile marine who have passed for first mate or master, are transferred. Five officers of the reserve have been given commands.
Folios 229-230: Information Regarding Battleships. Details of the battleships Baden and Bayern are provided, including a diagram of the machinery compartments of Baden (folio 229). Details of the battleship Lothringen and the light cruiser Konigsberg are provided.
Folios 230-231: Battle of Jutland (Damage Sustained by German Ships). Damage to the battle cruiser Lutzow, battleship Ostfriesland and light cruiser Rostock are described.
Folio 231: Miscellaneous Information. Mention of the temporary stranding of the submarine U.94, the raider Mowe and three Zeppelin shed at Ahlhorn being blown up.
Folio 231: Internal conditions in Germany. Food conditions were not as bad as in 1917. Hoarding and profiteering are on a large scale.
