Description

Folios 183-201: CB number 01431 O.X.O, Copy number 489, U.110 Interrogation of Survivors, April 1918. U.110 was sunk on 15 March 1918.

Folios 186-187: On 26 February 1918 proceeded from Wilhelmshaven via the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, the Sound, Kattegat and Skagerrak, North Sea, between Fair Isle and Shetland, inside the Hebrides and through the Minches. Sank the s.s. Princess, tank steamer Vitol and sailing ship Erica. On 9 March damaged by depth charges dropped by aircraft or airship. On 15 March sank s.s. Amazon but further damaged by depth charges dropped by a destroyer. The submarine surfaced and was abandoned. The captain was lost when run down by a destroyer.

Folio 187: Previous Cruises of U.110. (1) December 1917 shake-down cruise in the Sound. (2) December 1917 passed through Channel to operate in Bristol Channel and Irish sea where three ships were sunk.

Folio 187: The crew of U.110 numbered 43 of whom 7 were supernumerary rating for training. Ten were survivors. The most striking feature was their youth and inexperience.

Folio 192: Gunnery Information on: 10.5 cm. (4.1 in.) gun, 8.8 cm. (22 pr.) gun, Ammunition Supply and Storage. Disappearing mountings are only on earlier submarines. The 15 cm. guns on cruiser submarines are of an improved type.

Folio 193: Greatest fear was of depth charges and mines.

Folio 193: 4TH Submarine Flotilla Emden includes: U.67, U.82, U.86, U.93, U.94, U.95, U.96, U.97, U.105, U.107, U.108 and U.109. Losses were: U.28, U.84, U.93, U.95, U.106 and presumed lost U.109. There are two submarine shelters.

Folio 193: Kapitanleutnant Hersing is to have command of a cruiser submarine although preferred to remain in command of U.21.

Folio 193: Orders include a strict injunction against sinking hospital ships.

Folios 194-197: U.110?s gun layer had served on the battle cruiser Seydlitz from the outbreak of war until Nov. 1917. Information is provided on Seydlitz: Description of 28 cm. (11-in.) Turret Mountings, Turret?s Crew, Ventilation of the Gun House, Loading Arrangements and Ammunition Supplies, Sighting Gear and Control Instruments, Ammunition Stowage, Arrangements for the Prevention of Fire, Arrangements for the prevention of Flash passing to the Magazines, System of Control, Director Firing, Rangefinders, Searchlights, Anti-Aircraft Guns. Folios 197-199: During the Bombardment of Hartlepool on 16 December 1914 the Battle Cruiser Seydlitz was hit three times but no casualties. During the action off the Dogger Bank on 24 January 1915, enormous damage done when a shell struck her aftermost turret and exploded the ?ready ammunition?. The magazine had to be flooded and the entire gun crew and magazine crew were killed. During the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 Seydlitz was hit by one torpedo and 28 direct hits by gun fire and in great danger of sinking but just managed to reach harbour. Folio 199: Light Cruisers Konigsberg, Karlsruhe, Emden and Nurnberg. As a rule two cruisers lie in Schillig Roads and other two in Wilhelmshaven Harbour. Since the mutiny, moral and conditions of High Seas Fleet have improved. To man captured Russian Men-of-War, suggested that a certain number of men could be taken from the battleships.

Folio 200: In Germany food conditions were better than last year and there is a scarcity of copper and mica.

Folio 201: Appendix II: Translation of Letter Written by Marine Oberingenieur B. Schmidt dated 18 March 1918 to Kitty Schmidt.
