Description

Captured ship: Anne of London (master William Paine).

History: an English ship (pink, 52 tons), bound from the 'Figgary' [Figueira da Foz] on the Mondego River, Portugal to London, laden with 30 pipes of red and white wine; taken by a French privateer on 3/13 March 1693/4, retaken off Ushant on 4/14 March 1693/4 by HMS Germoon Prize (William Jones commanding), and brought by the prize crew into the Isles of Scilly, after damage by bad weather, where she was detained by Thomas Eggins the Scilly prize agent.

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: attestation and claim of the owners, Sir John Houblon [governor of the Bank of England], Isaac Houblon and Abraham Houblon of London, for 50 ton of wine, and some cork;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two letters of 15 and 23 March from Captain Jones at Plymouth to the Houblons, about the recapture, their ship being detained at the Isles of Scilly;
  • [CP 5-CP 6]: two letters of 30 March and 10 April from Samuel Stile at Plymouth, to the Houblons; Jones is happy the Anne should be hastened to you, so he have what is due to him by law; suggests they get an order for the Anne to proceed from Scilly to London, preferably in HMS Prince of Orange's convoy, despite the lack of depositions.
