Description

Folios 9797-100. Folios 97-98. Letter from Saml [Samuel] Garbett at Birmingham to William Burke thanking him for his advice and that he shall gratefully accept 'of the important countenance' of Burke should he (Garbett) attempt a bill by petition from the Carron Company [Garbett and Doctor Roebuck's company] or himself. In connection with a possible petition to Parliament he mentions Sir Charles Mordaunt and Mr [William Throckmorton] Bromley the Members of Parliament for Warwickshire, Sir Roger Newdigate, Mr Bagot and Lord Grey. He encloses a copy of his reply to 'a most obliging letter' from the Duke of Grafton: Folios 99-100. Letter from Samuel Garbett to the Duke of Grafton acknowledging the latter's letter of 2 May on the subject of the runaway workmen. He mentions Sir John Goodricke, Robert Croswell, a cooper at Gothenburg but a native of Montrose, James Christie (Croswell's brother-in-law), Cahman an iron master and herring salter at Gothenburg, Mr [Thomas] Millar the late Lord Advocate for Scotland and one Graham a workman now at Gothenburg who has 'actually sent twenty guineas to his wife he left in Scotland which hath had a dangerous effect upon our servants'.
