Description

Folios 87-88. Mr Baron Geo [George] Perrott's report to [Duke of Grafton] on the case of John Bould capitally convicted of breaking into William Mare's house in the daytime and stealing 'several things mentioned in the indictment'. He ends his report that, in pursuance of the King's commands to certify how far Bould is an object of mercy, 'I beg leave to certify that the law upon which this man was indicted had for its object the protection and security of the industrious poor who are obliged to labour for their bread abroad and are therefore daily liable to be stripped of that are little able to replace it if an Act founded upon such principles I thought should not become a dead letter but that an example should be made as a terror to others and to give a very valuable part of his Majesty's subjects (the laborious and industrious poor) that protection and security intended by the law for transportation now in the case of common offenders has almost ceased to be a punishment. And I do not find any circumstance in this man's case to render him an object of his Majesty's mercy'. Dated at Serjeants' Inn. Names mentioned William Mare, Ralph Ammorsley, Anne Mare, William Falkner, Adam Cope, Mary Warriler, Samuel Scraggs, Elizabeth Prince and Charles Fernihough.
