Description

Folios 222-233. Folios 223-225. Letter from Crs [?Cornelius] Holmes at Sunniside near Bishopwearmoth, Durham to Henry Seymour Conway that since part publication of the enclosed Memorial he has been very recently approached 'to direct a certain navigation on the Continent; and such as must be the only one in Europe that can make competition with any of these mentioned in the Memorial'. He is concerned that should that work be carried out it 'would not only be in opposition to what is designed in the Treatise, and mentioned in the Memorial, but must be attended with consequences not a little detrimental to the future commerce of England, as rivals in trade use their advantages'. Folios 223-225. Advertisement for printing by subscription Holmes's Treatise. Printed. Folios 226-233. Memorial relative to the Treatise of The Theory and Construction of the Harbours and Inland Navigation of Great Britain. There are several footnotes relating to trade such as 'The Turky [sic] Company [Turkey Company] hath scarce any more than a nominal existence, the French and Dutch have supplanted us in sundry considerable articles of exports; our manufactures have declined in one year to North America, fifty thousand pounds, even in time of peace; and the Americans seem inclined to deal no more with us upon account of the dearness of our commodities which forces them, perhaps, to a kind of despair, and rather to trade or smuggle with the French, Dutch etcetera, than deal with their mother country, whose prices take away all profits'.
