Folios 217-218. Letter from Saml [Samuel] Garbett at Birmingham [Warwickshire] to Willm [William] Burke expressing 'extreme pleasure to see such attention to the preservation of our manufactures' as Burke's letters show. He assures Burke that a good look out will be kept [for attempts to seduce workmen to Sweden] 'notwithstanding the expense we have been at which at times amounts to a considerable sum and will unavoidably happen on such occasions' an example of which he gives an account involving Peter Duff and Thomas Lewis who were engaged to go to Gothenburg by one Crosswell, a Scotsman living there. He has no great opinion of the Scottish 'petty officers of justice' in Montrose, accusing them of 'great chicanery'. He says that the considerable expense and the difficulties they meet with in Scotland to keep their workmen is discouraging and suggests that it would be of great use if he and Roebuck could sometimes obtain the gift of a tidewaiter's or salt officer's place 'for natives of the neighbourhood' as it would give them 'consequence with the set of people who are very apt to fail in executing the laws'.
