Description

Folios 197-202. Folios 197-198. Memorial of Sir Richard Betenson to the King relating the events when Thomas Rogers, John King, Samuel Matthews, Thomas Dudney, Simon Perigano, Andrew Benevenuto, Thomas Dudney, John King, Samuel Matthews, John Dugmore, Thomas Molloy, Thomas Lockskegg, William Godfrey, John Tisely, James Mackdonald, John Jordan, William Perry, Matthew Hills and one Bailey broke out of the jail on Wednesday 7 August having fatally stabbed the jailer and subsequently shot and killed one Mr Fletcher and dangerously wounded several other members of the inhabitants who were armed and endeavouring to prevent the escape. He asks that if it is deemed 'expedient to make any immediate and striking example' John King and Thomas Dudney would be the proper objects of it. Folio 199. Letter from Sidney Stafford Smythe to the Duke of Grafton acknowledging his letter and as commanded by the King he as suggested what occurs to him 'on that subject' and has mentioned Rogers as well as the others in the enclosed report. Folios 200-202. Smythe's report answering the King's command that he should point out by what course justice can legally be executed on John King, Samuel Matthews and Thomas Rogers 'with that expedition so much desired by the county of Kent'.
