Folios 184-185. Letter from Wr [Walter Blackett, Mayor of Newcastle, to 'My Lord' [Earl of Northumberland] relating to the dissatisfied colliers and pitmen. He writes that at a meeting held the previous evening by the magistrates and 'many gentlemen in the coal trade' it was resolved he (Blackett) should convey or accompany their request that 'your Lordship' lay their case before the government and would advise by what means he thinks the government can give the most effectual assistance. Blackett says 'in whatever light the proceedings of the magistrates and other gentlemen hitherto may appear, commendable or otherwise, they think they should be unpardonable to the nation and themselves if they did not now lay before Government such a representation as contains the whole truth of their proceedings to this time, and they also confess that they are at a loss what further steps to take than those set forth in their representation'. The representation said to be enclosed is not filed here.
