Folios 88-89. Folio 88. Mr Baron Richard Adams's report to the King on the following convicts capitally convicted at York but reprieved in order to be recommended for transportation - Thomas Smith, George Spencely, Richard Routledge, John Slack and Matthew Lee - and who subsequently attempted to break out of jail 'and make their escape in which they proceeded so far as to beat and bruise the gaoler and his under officers in an inhuman manner'. With the report enclosed:- Folio 89. Affidavit of Thomas Wharton, jailer of York Castle, William Bowser, turnkey, and Simon Brown, porter, giving the details of the attempted escape by William Atkinson otherwise John Brown, John Slack, Thomas Smith, George Spenceley, Richard Routlege, Matthew Lee, Matthew Parmentier and John Mackneal.
