The Big Lottery Fund was officially established by Parliament on 1 December 2006 and at the same time assumed the residual responsibilities of the dissolved National Lottery Charities Board (Community Fund), the New Opportunities Fund, and the Millennium Commission. It exists as an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Its function is to improve communities and the lives of people most in need, and is responsible for giving out half the money raised by the National Lottery for good causes with the money going to community groups and to projects that improve health, education and the environment.
