Description

Captured ship: Angel Gabriel of Gothenburg (master Borije Olsen).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (160 tons or 57 lasts, men), bound from St Martin, France to Gothenburg, laden with salt, brandy, wine, vinegar, paper, nuts, chestnuts and some money; taken 'some time since' [before June 1692], off Portland by the privateer William and Mary of London (William Holman commanding), and brought into Weymouth.

  • [CP 2]: attestation made before the ruling authorities of Gothenburg, May 1692;
  • [CP 3]: allegation;
  • [CP 4]: attestation that the captors plundered the Angel Gabriel to the value of £29 6s, with an itemised list of what was plundered and from whom, 26 July 1692;
  • [CP 5-CP 7]: three bills presented to the master for expenses incurred, e.g. for a guard to prevent embezzlement;
  • [CP 8]: attestation as to papers;
  • [CP 9-CP 11]: abstracts of the 29 ships papers (all these papers were restored) and translations from High Dutch and Low Dutch;
  • [CP 12]: libel of appeal, 22 June 1692;
  • [CP 13]: letter from Lewis Jackson of Weymouth explaining that the commission directed to them [to take examinations] was rudely taken away by Thomas Hyse, one of the commissioners, who is 'ill affected to the Government'
