Description

Captured ship: Angel Gabriel or Engel Gabriel of Danzig (master Christian Lehuart or Leonard).

History: a Danzig merchant ship (100 tons, owner John Mattijs), bound from Danzig via Dunkirk to Bordeaux, laden with wheat from Poland; taken on 5/16 August 1694 by HMS Soldado Prize (William Allen commanding), and brought into Spithead.

  • [CP 1]: one examination taken at Portsmouth;
  • [CP 2]: claim of John Mattijs;
  • [CP 3]: envelope from Danzig, with seals; part used as docket, endorsed 'commission and 10 examinations';
  • [CP 4]: commission with engraved portrait of William and Mary (R [Robert] White, engraver), August 1694, sent to Danzig;
  • [CP 5-CP 10]: attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Danzig, and an interrogatory [CP 9];
  • [CP 11-CP 12]: commission of appraisement, and apprasiement for the ship, valued at £132 7s 6d.
