This series contains records relating to work on single market directives, which set the framework for certain goods to be traded throughout the European Union, and their implementation in the UK. Subjects covered in these records are steps taken to negotiate in, consult and adopt various European Directives into UK law by Statutory Instruments. The team provided advice on the interpretation and practical application of the Directives concerned and representation of British Industry’s views at European Commission level. The series also contains papers on the Standards Policy Committee (SPC) which covers wider aspects and consideration of international standards.

The team within the Department of Trade and Industry concerned with standards went through several name changes, however the core function remained the same throughout covering European Commission Directives and the implementation in the UK.
These Directives included: Machinery Safety, Simple Pressure Vessels, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Personal Protective Equipment, Environment Noise Directive, Cableway Equipment, Electromagnetic Compatibility and Equipment for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres.
