Responsibility for industrial matters in Wales passed to the Welsh Office in 1975 with the creation of the Welsh Office's Industry Department. The Industry Department was responsible for supporting traditional industries such as coal mining and iron and steel production. Its remit also included the encouragement of inward investment into Wales as part of efforts to diversify the Welsh economy away from a reliance on traditional heavy industry. Industry Department also managed the awarding of grants for industry and managing the decline and job losses associated with the contraction of heavy industry. The records continued until the creation of the National Assembly for Wales in 1998
