The Further Education Funding Council for England (FEFCE) was set up by the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, and formally established in 1993. It took over responsibilities for allocating funds for the provision of further education from the local authorities and, in some cases, from the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council.
Its responsibilities include the requirement to ensure that facilities for sufficient education within this sector are provided, to allocate funds to colleges and other institutions providing full or part-time further education courses, to advise the secretary of state for education on the provision of further education, and to ensure that provision is made for assessing the quality of further education.
In 2001, the FEFCE was abolished. Its responsibilities relating to the funding and provision of further education institutions and courses was taken over by the newly established Learning and Skills Council. The responsibility for assessing the quality of the provision supplied was taken over by the Adult Learning Inspectorate.
