Description

Folios 159-160. A newsletter from [consul Hugh] Broughton, dated at Venice. Reports: the return to Rome from Naples of Cardinal Guidice, who will act for Spain; mediation between the Pope [Innocent XII] and the Emperor [Leopold I] about the Imperial ambassador, Count Martinitz; Livio Deschachi now Duke di [of] Bracciano, and is to entertain the Queen of Poland; arrival of Count Silvio Negrelli, envoy of the Duke of Modena; expected ratification by the Senate of the Treaty of Carlovitz [Karlowitz] with Turkey [Ottoman Empire], mentioning Mr Schryer, Lord Pagett; an earthquake; a 'defensive league' formed between the Emperor, Poland, Russia and Venice; opposition to concluding a peace from Cardinal Grimani and Signor Loredano, the States' [Estates General] ambassador at Vienna; no commission yet for Ambassador Mocenigo; the wreck of the Ursolaat Comacchio; the arrival of two herring boats from Yarmouth [Great Yarmouth, Norfolk], the John and Lawrence and the Robert and Thomas; the sailing of the Venetian convoy for Napoli [Romania]; information on a man named Donan, born in Germany or Holland of English and Irish ancestry.
