Description

Folios 178-179. Proceedings of the House of Commons including Sir John Philips' motion that an address be made to the King following which many views were expressed about irreligion and Socinianism; restoration of justice and virtue; no privilege against debts and discharges of trust, stopping the licentiousness of the press; the taking of greater care of the Protestant religion by putting into execution the laws against Roman Catholics 'so much the more necessary' because of alarm at the carrying on of a Catholic League abroad. Proposal in relation to the land tax of three shillings in the pound which proposal was carried notwithstanding objections against it.. Setting the quantum due for the arrears of subsidies pursuant to the treaties made with several foreign princes in connection with which the debate both in the Committee and the House was about what was demanded as due to the King of Denmark pursuant to the treaty in December 1696 whereby, among other things, he agreed that his subjects should forbear trading with France. In the report of that debate the words 'whether the King of Denmark publish any proclamation or edict to prohibit' and 'as far as he could do by allowing his subjects' ships to be confiscated' are underlined and the latter underlining has, in the margin, NB.
