The Sentencing Guidelines Council was established in 2004 under the Criminal Justice Act 2003. It was an advisory non-departmental public body of the Ministry of Justice. Its role was to encourage consistency of sentencing in all courts in England and Wales, supporting judges and magistrates in their decision-making. It was an independent body with both judicial and non-judicial members, chaired by the Lord Chief Justice.
The Sentencing Guidelines Council was replaced in April 2010 by the Sentencing Council.
