The Lord Advocate is the Chief Scottish Law Officer and headed up the Lord Advocate Department. His office's functions in relation to matters reserved to the Westminster Parliament were transferred to the Office of the Advocate General on 1 July 1999 (the date devolution under the Scotland Act 1998 took effect).
