Folio 174. RY [Robert Yard] reporting to Sir Jo [Joseph] Williamson. The number of forces that should be kept on foot will be discussed in the next session of Parliament. A standing army seems to many a thing of very dangerous consequence, and a pamphlet has been dispersed about town this week against one, containing very plausible arguments; although the author is no friend to this government. Meanwhile, each troop is reduced to 40, and each company of foot to 43 men. Lord Portland [William Bentinck] did not yet set any time for his departure for France. It will probably not be before the beginning of January, and not then unless Count Tallard [Camille d'Hostun, duc de Tallard] be ready at the same time. His Majesty talks of going to Paul's [?Saint Paul's Cathedral] on Thanksgiving day, but he might be dissuaded from it.
