Description

Folios 160-161. Newsletter addressed to Sir Joseph Williamson. Several congratulatory addresses have been presented to his Majesty, including a very good one from the University of Oxford. The Lord Mayor and court of aldermen waited on the King. Several colleges of the university of Cambridge have come up with a congratulatory address to the King, and were introduced by their chancellor the Duke of Somerset. Letters from Dublin say that the Lords have passed an act against clandestine marriages, and another for relief of the subject against dormant bonds and judgments. They have rejected the bills for enabling ecclesiastical persons to make leases for 25 years; for the real union and division of parishes; and for a better collecting certain dues to the Church, called Minister's money. The bill for hindering the reversal of several outlawries nd attainders, and to prevent the return of the subjects of Ireland who had gone to France without leave, was ordered to be engrossed; and so were the bill for the better supporting of Toryes [Tories], and for taking away the benefit of the clergy in some cases. The bill for an additional duty on tobacco, and for an additional custom on some merchandises, and for continuing of additional duty on beer, ale, etc. was committed to a Committee of the whole house.
