Description

Folio 146. Newsletter addressed to Sir Joseph Williamson. One Wray, who was convicted of a conspiracy to counterfeit Exchequer Notes, and sentenced to stand in the pillory, made his escape out of Newgate. The sheriffs of London are thereupon required to take care of the prison, as the keeper Fell has suffered several other escapes to be made. A report was spread about town last Wednesday that three homeward-bound East India ships, the King William, Benjamin and Tonqueen, had arrived in the Channel; but it proved to be an invention and trick of some stock jobbers [on the London Stock Exchange]. Lord Bellomont [Richard Coote] sailed from Cowes with the Deptford man of war and other ships, bound for New England. More bills were sent to Ireland: a bill for the more easy obtaining partitions of lands in coparceny and joint tenancy; a bill to prevent frauds by clandestine mortgages; a bill to prevent frivolous law suits and vexatious delays in inferior courts; and a bill to prevent abuses in making pewter and brass.
