Folio 135. RY [Robert Yard] reporting to Sir Jo [Joseph] Williamson [Nine Years' War]. Capt [Captain] Norris with the squadron from Newfoundland arrived in the Downes. Coll [Colonel] Gibson went ashore at Portsmouth; he has left St John's with 300 men, with 3 captains, 4 lieutenants and 3 ensigns. The fortifications were near finished. They give the same account as when Mr Nesmond appeared before St John's harbour. He sent 2 ships close in the harbour mouth, but they were forced off the coast by the high winds; they were seen again at a great distance at sea, but disappeared after that. The four battalions of guards have arrived from Ostend. Yesterday, being the King's birthday, the Council did not sit long, but appointed Tuesday next to proceed with the Irish bills.
