Description

Folios 103-104. Newsletter addressed to Sir Joseph Williamson [Nine Years' War]. Another general court of the Bank of England was held; considering that the resolution taken at their former meeting to lend the King money as particular members, though not as a bank, might be looked upon as an evasion of the Act of Parliament, they agreed to revoke the said resolution. It is expected with much impatience to hear of the Cadiz fleet, which is very rich. Sir Cloudesley Shovell arrived in the Downs. The Council approved two Irish bills, for the security of his Majesty's person and government, and the act against the dormant judgments. The Rupert, man of war of the West India squadron, arrived at Falmouth. Commander Captain Greenhill confirms the account of the Lincoln of the great mortality, and that Captain Dilkes is now commander-in-chief. They took in the West Indies several French privateers, richly laden with the plunder of Cartagena, and they afterwards plundered and burnt Petit Guavos [Haiti]. Vice Admiral Mitchell passed by Plymouth. Letters from Dublin say that his Majesty's ship Southampton arrived at Kinsale from Jamaica, which place she left with the Flame fireship and five merchant ships. She was parted from the latter in bad weather, and the fireship foundered at sea, but the men were all saved by the man of war, Captain Kirby, commander, who has a great quantity of gold and silver on board. About £60,000 of the City loan has been paid in already.
