Folios 98-99. Newsletter addressed to Sir Joseph Williamson [Nine Years' War]. The weather has been very tempestuous; this increases the concern for the Cadiz fleet. They were altogether 53 sail, having on board 5,000,000 dollars. There are three homeward-bound East India ships in this fleet. They write from O Porto [Oporto] of the arrival of Captain Davis of Bristol, bringing Newfoundland news. The day before he sailed, a French ship appeared before the Bay of Bulls, where no ships were in harbour but himself; in Bonavista there were eight or nine sail. His Majesty's ship Lincoln arrived at St Helen's [Isle of Wightr]. Captain [Thomas] Dilks was in command of the squadron. Sir Cloudesley Shovell sailed from Spithead for the Downs; he is to command the King's convoy. Rear Admiral [John] Benbow sailed the same day from the Downs, with several men of war bound for Holland. The Duke of Ormonde returned home to Ireland. It was proposed that the Bank of England should lend the King £300,000 upon security of tallys; but the Bank did not think it convenient, when their credit was so newly restablished.
