Description

Folios 90-91. Newsletter addressed to Sir Joseph Williamson [Nine Years' War]. The Lord Justices and Council met again to proceed upon the consideration of the bills transmitted from Ireland. They approved the following: the money bill for laying additional duties on tobacco and other goods and merchandises; the bill for confirming the attainder of St John Everard and confirming several grants to the Earl of Romney; the bill for real union and division of parishes; the bill for better recovery of certain dues belonging to the church, called minister's money; and a bill to prevent butchers being grasiers [graziers]. The great ships have all come from Spithead. Sir George Rooke came ashore, and Sir Cloudesley Shovell is ordered to the Downs with some of the ships now at Spithead. A general court of the Bank of England will be held to consider a proposal to lend the King £ 200,000. The city intends to receive the King upon his arrival from Holland with all possible demonstrations of loyalty and affection, as well as joy for the peace. The Lords of the Treasury, with Lords of the Council, went to London to meet with the Lord Mayor, the court of aldermen and common council, who proposed to make a loan to his Majesty for paying off the seamen of the fleet.
