Description

Folios 85-86. RY [Robert Yard] reporting to Sir Joseph Williamson. They received reports of parliamentary proceedings from Ireland (mentioned in the previous folio); the House of Commons also finished the heads of the bills for the encouragement of Protestants 'strangers' [French Huguenots] to come and settle in that kingdom, and for the encouragement of the linnen and hempen manufacture. Other bills transmitted from Ireland are: an act for raising a supply for His Majesty by way of a poll; an act for laying an additional duty on tobacco, ale and other liquors, as well as customs on several goods and merchandises; an act for the better security of His Majesty's royal person and government; an act for confirming estates and possessions held and enjoyed by the late acts of settlement and explanation; an act to prevent charge and expence in electing members of Parliament; and an act for the better possessing of Toryes [Tories property]. The news of the peace ending the [Nine Years' War] has occasioned great joy in Dublin. The first and second rate ships have gone from Spithead in order to be laid up at Chatham and Portsmouth. Sir George Rooke has gone on board the Defiance. Lt Adl [Lieutenant Admiral] Allemonde has sailed for Holland with the Dutch men of war. The Lords of the Treasury are now endeavouring to raise £300,000 by a loan in the city.
