Description

Folio 95. An unsigned newsletter to [ambassador] Sir Joseph Williamson, dated at Whitehall [Middlesex]. Reports on: the arrival of Straits [of Gibraltar] fleet in the Downs, via Milford Haven [Pembrokeshire]; the Virginia fleet's arrival in Ireland reported by 'Lloyd who keeps a coffee house' but who will not reveal his sources; Sir George Rooke's fleet not yet being at Spithead [Hampshire]; Sir Harry [Henry] Hobart being made a customs commissioner vice Mr Chadwick; Mr Stepney, minister to the 'Princess on the Rhine', made a trade commissioner, vice Mr Methuen; Mr Jekyl replacing Mr Combes; another perjury trial at the King's Bench, connected to Earl of Bath versus the Earl of Montague, mentioning Sir John Copleston; the Lord Chancellor [John Somers] being well; and Sergeant Pemberton is dead.
