Folios 87-88. Manuscript extract from the Gazette de Paris, being news from Edinburgh dated 20 May 1697. The directors of the East India Company have sent agents to Hamburg to borrow money and receive subscriptions from people desirous of entering into a company for this trade. But they have been advised that Sir Ricaut [Paul Rycaut], the Prince of Orange's resident at Hamburg [from 1689 to 1700], has presented a memorial to the magistrates, stating that these agents are not authorised and therefore have no power to make such proposals; and that he would regard it as an insult for which he would demand vengeance. These threats have prevented subscriptions, and the East India Company wishes to lodge a complaint in the next Parliament.
