Description

Folios 74-75. An unsigned newsletter to [ambassador] Sir Joseph Williamson, dated at Whitehall [Middlesex]. Reports on: the arrival of the 'Straits [of Gibraltar] fleet'; return of ships from Holland under convoy of Centurion, with Captain Price not yet returned; the shooting dead of Colonel Cornwall's man servant; regiments marching to encamp on Black Heath [Blackheath, Kent]; plans for [Prince and Princess Anne of Denmark] to visit Tunbridge [Kent]; the passage of the Lords Justices and Lord Chancellor of Ireland [John Methuen] from Holyhead [Anglesey] aboard the HMS Penzance and Soestdyke yacht; the illness and recovery of Lord Chancellor [John Somers]; arrival of the 'great ship' with Sir George Rooke and Sir Cloudesly Shovell at the Downs, after sailing from 'the Nore' [Thames Estuary] via the Godwin Sands, and destined for Spithead [Hampshire]; arrival of the galleys Gospright, Trumbull, and Jeffery galleys from Scanderoon [Iskenderun, Turkey, Otterman Empire], the Eagle from Zant [Zante, Zakynthos, Greece] and the Bolton from Egypt; arrival of the Beeston in Bristol [Gloucestershire] from Jamaica, reporting anxiety there of the French; and the subscription of £100,000 of Bank of England 'tallies', and a reduction interest rates.
