Folios 58-59. A letter from Ja [James] Vernon to Lord Ambassador [Joseph] Williamson, dated at Whitehall [Middlesex]. Refers to: Williamson's inability to get into his house; and the sincerity of the French in negotiations [over the Treaty of Rijswijk]. Reports on the 'Treasury's great work': a victuallers' debt of £600,000, and 'tullies struck upon the salt fund which were assigned to the Navy Board'. Also reports on 'something lately happened at the Exchequer which might be a great blow to the credit of it': a £17,000 shortage, an examination in parliament, a seemingly unavoidable forfeiture, Mr [William] Palmes, Mr Lownds, and [John] Peters the under-teller.
