Administrative / biographical background

English Heritage's Historic Areas Advisory Committee was formed in 1986 with the responsibility for providing expert advice to the English Heritage Commission on its statutory functions in relation to the preservation of historic areas. The main subjects on which the Committee advised the Commission were the making of grants and loans for work which preserves or enhances the character or appearance of conservation areas including acquisition grants; acquisition by the Commission of any building of special historical or architectural interest situated in a conservation area and its subsequent disposal; means of finding uses for buildings and land in historic areas, both in general and in respect of particular buildings; reviewing and periodically reporting on the general state of preservation and need for enhancement of historic areas throughout England (other than London), including advice on planning applications and road schemes. The Committee was merged with the Historic Buildings Advisory Committee in 1991.
