Administrative / biographical background

Following the abolition of the Greater London Council (GLC) in 1986, English Heritage assumed the heritage functions previously exercised by the GLC's Historic Buildings Division. These included care of the historic buildings previously owned by the GLC, responsibility for Greater London Sites and Monuments Register and for historic building planning consent in the former GLC Area. Consequently the London Advisory Committee was set up in the same year with responsibility for providing expert advice to the Commission on its statutory functions relating to individual buildings, monuments, conservation areas, parks and gardens in London and in particular policy matters and casework which is novel, contentious or sets a precedent.
