The Asylum and Immigration Tribunal came into being on 4 April 2005 as the successor to the Immigration Appellate Authority and the Immigration Appeals Tribunal. The Tribunal was set up under the Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants etc) Act 2004 to hear and decide appeals against decisions made by the Home Office in matters of asylum, immigration and nationality.
In February 2010 the work of the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal transferred into the two-tier unified tribunal structure, created under the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007. From this time, appeals were sent to a new Immigration and Asylum Chamber in the First-tier Tribunal.
