Folio 290. Letter from R Rigby in London to Alex [Alexander] Rigby at Laton [Layton] Hall, Lancashire. After writing about family financial matters, in connection with which he mentions 'Uncle Ned', he continues 'Doctor Birch is a scandal to his profession; he plotted to bring in this Prince and now is his mortal enemy, and to me has said such things that made me sweat to hear them. Pray burn this after perusal, I'm afraid he'll not be quiet but I am privately told Fenwick names him; God of his mercy grant him to escape but I fear it'. He encloses the King's speech and Parliament's address and expresses the hope that these will convince the recipient that the King 'is the King, and a good one, and a rightful one' and that he has reason to think 'that better never was nor can ever be'. He prays that the King may be preserved 'from priests, Jesuits, Papists and Frenchmen'. [? Possibly a seized letter]. The enclosures are not filed here.
