Folio 240. Letter from Thomas Rookwood undated but endorsed 'Mr Rookwood 6 July 1695'. 'It being his Electoral Highness the Duke of Bavaria his orders to the Intendant of the province to return me to France, was commanded back, but believing it not the intentions of the government, thought it most safe to come home, and throw myself under your protection, after a year and a half continuance in the town of Bruges, as will appear by the governor's attestation with me. At my arrival here, being willing to make it known to the government informed myself to whom I was to address, and according[ly] presented myself to the Duke of Shrewsbury, who honoured me with his answer, that it was to your Honour I was to address myself, which accordingly I here throw myself into your hands, ready to appear when and as you shall think fit to command'.
