Folio 218. Letter from Jo [John] Mackie at Harwich [Essex] about the arrival of Mr [?Henry] Browne, formerly Commissioner of the Customs, and since the revolution, secretary for the kingdom of England to the late King [James II] at St Germains, together with Captain Francis Stafford, gentleman of the Bedchamber 'to that prince', each with passes from the Duke [? of Shrewsbury] for themselves and their servants. He says that his surprise at seeing 'men of their character at this juncture' made him stricter in searching their goods and papers in the hope of 'finding an occasion of stopping them, lest the office had been imposed upon in the obtaining their passes' but he found nothing.
