Description

Captured ship: America of Boston (master Hugh Sampson of Horne).

History: an English merchant ship (200 tons, 1 swivel gun, owner William Clarke of Boston, Massachusetts), bound from Boston to London, laden with sugar, whale oil, logwood, molasses, and beaver pelts; taken in fight on 5/15 July 1690 off the Scilly Isles by a French privateer, retaken the same day by HMS Mary Galley (James Wishart commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1]: two examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 2]: claims of William Clark, James Eyton and Jeremiah Johnson, all of Boston;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: commission of appraisement, appraisement and inventory of goods;
  • [CP 5]: order in Council that part of the salvage be granted to the ships' crew, due to their losses sustained in fight.

[Decision: restored, paying salvage, 21 August 1690]
