Folio 279. Letter from Jos [?Joseph] Bennett to James Vernon. 'When I waited upon you the other day, you told me how Mr St John had informed you that I had reported that I gave you £100 for procuring Mr Young's pardon. I did then very truly tell you how the business was, and Mr Young knows, I never used your name to him on that account, or of any person under you, as by his own letter enclosed do the appear. But all this proceeds from the malice of one who has several times attempted to do me harm by imprisonment and otherwise, because I prosecuted him in the Exchequer for our pay, which he received several years ago when he was agent to the regiment I belong; and I beg you will oblige him to maintain his assertion or punish him for the indignity offered to a person of your quality'. Enclosure not filed here.
