Folios 277-278. Letter from Jno [John] Young to [?James Vernon]. 'My confinement here in Newgate in order to take my trial this week about that supposed unfortunate accident concerning Mr Carey does not hinder my attending you to justify Captain Bennett against the reflection laid upon him. I do affirm that he never said that he had given you or anyone one penny of money for procuring the outlawry to be reversed, but what was given was done by my own consent and desire and not given to any person belonging to you. As for the bond I gave him I did it voluntarily and by no manner of force he having been at great trouble and charges these six years past and proved himself the best friend I had in the world in standing by me when I was not able to help myself and this I will at any time depose upon oath if it pleases God to acquit me of this misfortune'.
